We are all related
– Nancy Jones
With September comes the final days of harvesting tomatoes in my garden. It’s a joy to see and taste the fruits of my labor. It also brings me satisfaction that these tomatoes and other vegetables have been grown using methods that enrich the soil. It is a way to contribute in my small way to a healthy environment.

I remember the sense of pride in the voice Wilfredo, the first coffee producer I met on a trip to Nicaragua, as he talked about his coffee and the sustainable methods he used. Now, as we confront news of the climate crisis at every turn, I wonder how his production has been impacted.
I am grateful for fair trade farmers as they led the way in promoting sustainable farming practices. Our support for them continues to be important. As we’ve learned, we can’t just work for our small corner of the world. We are all related, and our actions contribute to either the health or destruction of the planet.
Join me in supporting Chicago Fair Trade as it continues the work of educating our city about the importance of fair trade for sustaining communities around the world.

The work with youth is important and should not just be at the middle class schools. This is not a criticism of current practices but rather a heartfelt statement that this issue resonates and is politically significant with students from lower income families. Among other things, it is helpful in engendering an internationalist perspective.
