The planet and its people are interconnected – Fair Trade offers a path for helping both
– Jocelyn Leitzinger
The events of this decade – the ongoing pandemic, racism, income inequality, and the nearly constant floods, droughts, wildfires, and storms – have taken their toll on all of us, me included.
When it comes to these world-wide problems – these grand challenges – it can feel impossible to do anything that really matters. One person trying to save water is quite literally a drop in the ocean.
But then I remember this meme that has been making the rounds:
“When people talk about traveling to the past, they worry about radically changing the present by doing something small, but barely anyone in the present really thinks that they can radically change the future by doing something small.”
Despite all the heartache, and the fear, and the sorrow of the past couple years – what really stands out to me is the stories: People doing what they can with what they have to make a positive impact in their communities. Even if it’s small.
For me, my small thing is serving on the board of Chicago Fair Trade.
I can think of no other organization that does so much with so little to address the issues I care most about – supporting fair and livable wages, gender equality, environmentally sustainable products and production methods, and justice for workers in our communities – here at home and abroad. Chicago Fair Trade supports small businesses that uphold these values and educates consumers to make responsible choices, reaching far beyond the Chicagoland area.
If you have the means, I hope you will join me in supporting this wonderful organization. I will be personally matching the first $200 in donations, so your financial gift will have double the impact.
