SUMMARY:“Made in Bangladesh” Zoom Screening
DESCRIPTION:\nZoom screening of the 2019 film “Made in Bangladesh,” followed by Q and A with Jackie Corlett of Motif Handmade.\n\n\n\nIn recognition of Fashion Revolution Week 2021, please join Dominican University, Chicago Fair Trade, and the Apparel Industry Board, Inc. for a Zoom screening of the film Made in Bangladesh. This 2019 release, directed by Rubaiyat Hossain, is based on the life of Daliya Akter, a garment worker who escaped child marriage and went on to lead a trade union in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka.\n\n\n\nDhaka was the site of the Rana Plaza factory collapse in 2013 that resulted in more than 1,100 deaths and spurred international attention to the working conditions of garment workers in the global south and led to the creation of Fashion Revolution, the international volunteer-led advocacy group.\n\n\n\nThe screening will be followed by Q and A with Jackie Corlett, founder of CFT business member Motif Handmade, connecting sustainable designers with fair trade, handmade fabrics and ethical small-batch production from Bangladesh. Jackie has partnered with artisans in Bangladesh since 1989.\n\n\n\nMade In Bangladesh has six wins for Best Film, Best Director, and Public Awards from the African Diaspora International Film Festival 2019, the Amiens International Film Festival 2019, the Asia Pacific Screen Awards 2019 and the Festival International de Film Saint-Jean-de-Luz 2019, among others.\n\n\n\nThis event is made possible by the generous support of Dominican University.\n\n\n\n\nJackie Corlett is a businessperson and designer who loves connecting fellow designers and buyers with Motif’s great network of professional artisan partners in Bangladesh. Confession … she has a favorite! As a textile designer, creating new fabrics together with experienced hand weavers is her happy place! In 1998 she set up Motif in Dhaka, the nation’s capital, and in 2019 she established Motif Handmade in the U.S.\n\n\n\nJackie also enjoys leading design and marketing workshops for fellow artisan-based social businesses.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDominican University’s fashion program offers an opportunity for students who wish to explore the fashion industry. Fashion is both an art form and a business. In the fashion department at Dominican, you will gain the skills you need to prepare for a career in any aspect of the fashion and retail industries, including design, merchandising, sales, management and more. Whichever fashion program you choose, you will benefit from Dominican’s signature blend of liberal arts focus and real-world experience. And you will graduate as a well-rounded individual, prepared to make your mark.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you’d like to make a donation to Chicago Fair Trade as you register for the screening, we’re offering the premiums above!\n\n\n\nFor a $10 donation, get a CFT face mask and CFT will donate a mask to a local nonprofit. $10 does include shipping but does not include Eventbrite fees. For a $25 donation, get a zero eco-impact Motif Handmade scarf mask, made by artisans in Bangladesh. $25 does include shipping but does not include Eventbrite fees. For a $40 donation, get a Motif Handmade denim/kantha crossbody purse, made by artisans in Bangladesh. $40 does include shipping but does not include Eventbrite fees.\n
