Mirembe Kawomera Cooperative

Peace Kawomera Coffee Cooperative – Eastern Uganda (Mbale district).  They are the producers of Mirembe Kawomera coffee and their farmers visited Chicago in March 2008.  www.mirembekawomera.com

Providing education to over 500 students, the Nankus Primary School is attended by the sons and daughters of Peace Kawomera members. In fact, the cost of tuition, books, and uniforms is often covered with money earned from coffee farming—opportunities which were not available to these farming families prior to fair trade. Nankus Primary is already closely connected with the cooperative, and was the recipient of investment funds through fair trade's social premium in the fall of 2007. Even with this support, the school is in need of more classrooms and teachers to accommodate its growing student body.
