Aldermen Backing Fair Trade City Resolution
Thanks for Your Support!
Prior visits to Alderman Joe Moore and Alderman Toni Preckwinkle produced supportive responses from them on their interest in seeing Chicago become a Fair Trade City. Both pledged to support a City Council Resolution. Visits are being planned with Aldermen throughout the city. Here are reports on recent visits to aldermen.
Alderman Waguespak from the 32nd Ward agreed to support the effort to become a Fair Trade City and to support the City Council Resolution at a visit from Jen Staff and Liz Leahy, two of his constituents and members of Chicago Fair Trade.
Notes from the meeting with him:
-very familiar with fair trade; was a Peace Corp volunteer in Kenya and worked a lot with micro-enterprise and small businesses.
-already serves fair trade coffee in office most of the time and personally buys it for himself.
-will give CFT some feedback on the draft of the resolution.
-is willing to have CFT put info in his office.
-is willing to have CFT at neighborhood events for tabling.
-would like to incorporate fair trade education in to his school
visit-education program (presentations in our ward's elementary schools).
-is interested in May 14th event in Daley Plaza to celebrate World Fair Trade Day.
-will work with us to try to get more FT businesses in ward.
Alderman Rey Colon from the 35th Ward agreed to support the work to become a Fair Trade City and seems willing to have information about fair trade at his ward's farmer's market. Thanks to Lia Valerio for making this visit.
